Starting a conversation

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to meet and greet people in Gaelic? Gaelic speakers staying at your B&B, hotel or hostel would instantly feel at home.

Here are a few common greetings to try out:

Madainn mhathGood morning
Feasgar mathGood afternoon
Oidhche mhathGood night

Math and mhath

Math means good in Gaelic.

Notice that it changed to mhath after oidhche and madainn but stayed as math after feasgar.

This is because the words madainn morning and oidhche night are both feminine words. The word following a feminine word is aspirated - "h" is put in after the first letter and the sound changes to be softer.
